We are proud to have helped raise over $20,000 for our own Redding Elementary School!

Those of you who follow our social media know that Redding was facing a severe funding cut and needed to raise over $15,000 to keep its literacy specialist. Since Redding is located on the upper edge of the Tenderloin, its students are generally on the lower end of the socioeconomic scale. In addition, these disadvantaged students face another disadvantage because they often do not speak English as a first language.

In fact, there are more than 15 (fifteen) languages spoken at Redding.

Without a literacy specialist and a program to help these kids learn English, they would be at a severe disadvantage when they move on to middle school (not to mention high school). College would be virtually out of the question. That’s just not right.

Something needed to be done. . .

So, some compassionate parents, businesses, organizations, and just general citizens came together and formed a loose coalition that ended up raising $22,863.31 for these kids. It’s an amazing example of people working together for the common good. And, as Frederick Douglass said:

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken grown ups.”

Here are the numbers:

Total: Approximately $24,000. More detail here: https://www.gofundme.com/literacy-support-at-redding

*The “other” category includes money that was raised by good ole-fashioned donation buckets that we put out at local businesses here in the Lower Polk. Therefore, we wish to do a shoutout to the following local merchants (and to their patrons):
